Latin Roots & Affixes, Lesson 16

Today's lesson will focus on the prefixes chrom, ob, per, and util as well as the roots cept, flect, here, and tact.

PREFIXES

The prefix chrome means “color”. Do you remember Kodak’s Kodachrome color film?

The prefix ob means "in the way" or "over". Perhaps, you have seen the phrase obstruction of justice?

The prefix per means “through”. Can you figure out how the word permit was put together?

The prefix util means “use”. Utilize is a formal way to say “use”.

ROOTS

The root cept means “take” or "hold". No doubt you recognize the words interception and receptionist.

The root flect (and its variant flex means “bend”. Narcissus was said to have fallen in love with his own reflection.

The root here means "stick". We have already learned the word adhere as in the phrase “adhere to the rules”.

The root tact means “touch”. Did you hope that NASA would have announced contact with extraterrestrial beings?

  8. A domestic cat is inherently😄 in- means "in" quick, cautious, and demanding. These characteristics need not be taught.
  9. A person with physical handicaps must overcome many obstacles 😄 Have you run through an obstacle course?in life. A Special Olympics athlete is special indeed.
